EmpowerHER Maine

This project provides a holistic support system for immigrant women survivors of sexual violence by fostering integration, healing, and empowerment. Through English language learning, cultural orientation, support groups, and wellness activities, the project ensures that participants gain the confidence and skills to navigate their new environment while building strong social connections.

Each month, women gather for support group meetings where they share experiences, learn essential life skills, and engage in cultural and recreational activities that promote mental and physical well-being. Activities such as yoga, storytelling, pottery, and community outings help reduce isolation, build resilience, and create a sense of belonging.

This initiative is rooted in trauma-informed care and a culturally responsive approach, ensuring that women receive language support, healing spaces, and practical knowledge to rebuild their lives in the U.S. The project also strengthens economic independence by equipping participants with the confidence to seek jobs, start businesses, or further their education.

Why This Matters

Many immigrant women, especially survivors of sexual violence and exploitation, face language barriers, cultural isolation, and economic struggles. Our program provides the tools and community they need to rebuild their lives with dignity and independence.

Our Activities

We create opportunities for learning, healing, and community-building through monthly support group sessions and engaging activities, including:

  • Dance/ Step Aerobics – A fun and energetic way to improve cardiovascular health and boost confidence.
  • Yoga on the Lawn – Gentle movement and stretching exercises to reduce stress and promote relaxation.
  • Art Classes – A creative outlet for self-expression and healing through painting, pottery, and other art forms.
  • Park Visits – Providing a peaceful and refreshing space for reflection and group connection.
  • Farmers' Markets – Exploring fresh, local produce while learning about healthy food options.
  • Kickboxing – A high-energy activity to build strength, relieve stress, and boost self-defense skills.
