WOUNDED HEALERS INTERNATIONAL IN MAINE

In Maine, we support African immigrant women—many of whom are survivors of sexual violence, trafficking, forced migration, or displacement-related trauma. Our approach is culturally rooted, trauma-informed, and grounded in community care and sisterhood.

We focus on three interconnected pillars:

We Promote Mental Health Through Movement and Mindfulness

Through the Maine Afro Yoga Project, we create safe, joyful spaces for women to reconnect with their bodies and regulate their nervous systems using:

  • African-rooted yoga and breathwork

  • Slow flow, power movement, and trauma-informed somatic practices

  • Nature-based healing through outdoor gatherings, forest walks, and seasonal water-based events

  • Storytelling and spiritual connection grounded in African traditions

We offer consistent, culturally relevant wellness spaces that support emotional healing and resilience.

We Strengthen Economic Empowerment and Entrepreneurial Skill

We provide African immigrant women with the knowledge, tools, and support to build stable livelihoods and plan for long-term independence.

Our services include:

  • Job readiness training, including resume support, interview preparation, and leadership development
  • Entrepreneurship workshops covering business planning, financial literacy, and marketing
  • Personalized support to launch or grow businesses rooted in cultural knowledge and community values
  • Collaborative programming with shelters, housing partners, and community centers to ensure access for women in transition

We ensure that economic empowerment is not only accessible—but sustained.

We Foster Culturally Relevant Peer Support

We reduce isolation and foster healing by building trusted networks of support and advocacy.

We offer:

  • Support groups for survivors of sexual violence, trafficking, and migration-related trauma
  • Culturally informed resource navigation to connect women with legal, health, and social services
  • Advocacy for mental health access that reflects cultural realities and immigrant experiences
  • Partnerships with local organizations to ensure African women are not left out of critical care systems

We create spaces where women are not only seen and heard, but supported and celebrated.
