Sexual Violence Survivors
Support Programs in Maine

In Greater Portland, we provide direct and ongoing services and safety support for African immigrants ages 13 and above who are survivors of sexual assault. We facilitate Sexual Assault Victim Services, Advocacy, Awareness, Outreach, and Community Engagement by:
✦ Eliminating linguistic and cultural barriers through multilingual communication strategies and targeted outreach within African immigrant communities.
✦ Providing direct services through culturally rooted peer advocates and program staff who build trust, reinforce coping skills, and connect survivors to crisis intervention, recovery supports, referrals, and wraparound services.

We do this through our three programs::

Healing Through Movement

Culturally grounded movement practices rooted in African traditions — helping women reclaim their bodies, process trauma, and find belonging in community.

Movement & Mindfulness for Healing

Through the Maine Afro Yoga Project, we create welcoming spaces where participants reconnect with their bodies, release stress, and build resilience through culturally grounded movement practices.

  • African-rooted yoga, breathwork, and grounding practices
  • Trauma-informed movement, dance, and somatic healing
  • Storytelling, music, and practices inspired by African traditions
  • Studio classes, community sessions, and partner-hosted programs

These spaces help participants regulate their nervous systems, rebuild confidence, and experience healing in community.

Nature & Environmental Justice
🌲

Nature as Medicine

Forest walks, outdoor healing circles, and nature-based wellness designed to reduce isolation and connect African immigrant women with Maine's landscapes.

Environmental Justice

Inclusive Outdoor Access & Nature Healing

Access to nature is essential for mental health, belonging, and environmental justice. We remove barriers that prevent immigrant women from safely engaging with Maine's outdoor spaces.

  • Guided forest walks, seasonal outdoor healing events, and nature gatherings
  • Outdoor healing circles and reflection practices that support trauma recovery
  • Water-based and land-based wellness experiences designed for safety and cultural inclusion
  • Partnerships with local outdoor organizations to expand equitable access to public lands

Through this work, we reduce isolation, strengthen community resilience, and ensure immigrant families are included in Maine's outdoor and environmental spaces.

Seen, Heard & Supported

Trusted networks of culturally informed support — connecting African immigrant women to healing, advocacy, and belonging in Maine.

We Foster Culturally Relevant Peer Support

We reduce isolation and foster healing by building trusted networks of support and advocacy — ensuring African women are not left out of critical care systems.

  • Support groups for survivors of sexual violence, trafficking, and migration-related trauma
  • Culturally informed resource navigation to connect women with legal, health, and social services
  • Advocacy for mental health access that reflects cultural realities and immigrant experiences
  • Partnerships with local organizations to ensure African women are included in critical care

We create spaces where women are not only seen and heard — but supported and celebrated.
